How our Story Began

Twenty years ago, Oswaldo, a Costa Rican national who grew up in Spain, left the rat race behind to follow his dream. Oswaldo dreamed of buying land in the jungles, surrounded by toucans, macaws, tapirs, howler monkeys, and an immense number of trees that could bring peace, tranquility, and meaning to every day. He wanted to create a place where his mother could retire in her homeland and where he could live by the values and vision that resonated with him.

So Oswaldo traveled to Costa Rica and set off across the country, looking at land for sale. That's when he found the land Rustic Roots lies on, and he named it "Casa Pequena" (small house) after the first small house he built there. But before it was built, he lived in a tent, planted coconut trees, and built each building by hand. He did not hire professionals, but rather learned everything as he went along. Rustic Roots Eco-farm (formerly Casa Pequena) is his passion project. Many who visit are in awe of his work ethic and his commitment to perfecting all facilities, with a never-ending list of projects to work on to make Rustic Roots Eco-farm a place where guests are comfortable and want to spend time learning about nature and immersing themselves in it.

Why Rustic Roots?

On the property, living trees are cut down to construct buildings. Part of the reason for this is that Rustic Roots eco farm is constructed along the edges of Corcovado National Park, and national legislation ensures that this is enforced. However, Oswaldo opted to use such wood rather than concrete to build, and made sure that each piece of wood was hewn and polished to maintain its natural form, and thus each piece. of the puzzle fits together to create a unique one-of-a-kind cabin. This look is 'rustic'. And why 'roots'? Roots indicated that we are connected to the land that we care for, and in turn, the land takes care of us.

We make adhere to permaculture practices on our farm, whilst ensuring that we are entirely self-sufficient and off-grid. Electricity on our farm is generated from solar panels. Water used all comes from water tanks which store rain water as well as from the river on the property. We grow many fruits and vegetables on our farm and what we cannot grow is purchased from farms surrounding us. Our chickens who produce eggs for your breakfast, also love eating food scraps, so nothing goes to waste. We also recycle all food waste using Bokashi and worms to create compost which is used in our gardens.
